Reading Implementation Compass Approach

KICK ILLITERACY OUT OF AFRICA USING THE RICA APPROACH

THE BACKGROUND OF RICA

Each year most learners perform poorly or drop out of school simply because they cannot read and comprehend and that has never missed in any of national report during the release of national examinations results.
In 2018 TIN conducted field research in over 50 schools allover Uganda and we found out that the reason why children cannot read is simply because we teacher lack basic knowledge and contextualized strategies of teaching reading simply because reading is not fully taught at teacher training colleges, secondly most schools have left the entire burden in the hands of the lower-class teachers finally we also found out that since reading is not examined as an independent subject at national level it is not prioritized in most schools. We also discovered that 70% teachers out of the 850 we had trained had a negative attitude towards reading and these were mainly teachers in upper classes, we also discovered out of the 350 school leaders we had trained only 10% had a positive attitude and interest towards reading and the rest their main focus was on how to pass national examinations yet school leaders should be the major promoters of reading at all levels of learning if we are to kick illiteracy out of Africa.
Due to the above findings by TIN and my past experience of repeating classes thrice in primary level (Okware Peter) since I could not read by the age of 11 years, it led us to introduce a reading approach called RICA-Reading Implementation Compass Approach and we have developed it for over 10 years while testing it in class before we eventually started training teachers.

WHAT IS RICA

RICA is a contextualized reading approach that promotes reading in all classes among all teachers and it was recommended by
the Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda in 2019. We have trained over teachers 12500 since 2017

RICA is an acronym of Reading Implementation Compass Approach.
